Take a peek behind the scenes of our Pumpkin Spice Farm-to-Face beauty workshop at Kula Country Farms.
Our theme for this Maui beauty workshop was “Pumpkin Spice And Everything Nice.”
Participants crafted their own Pumpkin Spice Latte bath, an enzymatic Pumpkin Papaya face mask, and a Seasonal Body Oil, all customized to suit their skin’s needs for the autumn months.
Every year in fall, Kula Country Farms opens its gates for a few weeks of vibrant pumpkin patch.
The farm buzzes with activity, featuring food stalls, local vendors, and an array of pumpkins in every shade and size imaginable.
The whole team of this family-owned farm does such an amazing job decorating the pumpkin patch and farm with festive decorations, signage, and picture-perfect backdrops set against a stunning view.
And the view is unbelievable! Maui’s expansive bicoastal landscape to one side, Haleakala volcano to the other.
Our spot for the farm-to-face beauty workshop was a beautiful gazebo, lined with an enchanting display of pumpkins, offering privacy and shelter from the elements — wind, sun, and rain — all of which we experienced during the course of our workshop. That’s Maui weather for you!
As participants enter, our table invited them with an abundance of marigolds, hibiscus, sunflowers, mini pumpkins, herbs, and spices, and intriguing concoctions.
Our journey began with a meditation session to release tension and to sharpen our senses.
We focused on the sounds, sights, smells, and sensations around us, inhaling the delightful scents of spices and fragrant flowers while breathing in the crisp, clean air.
Lei ʻohu Cosmetics workshops are thoughtfully crafted to engage all the senses.
Upon opening our eyes, we once again marveled at the beautiful surroundings: our picturesque spot, the expansive ocean view, the étagère filled with fresh flowers, fruits, and a delightful backdrop of hundreds of pumpkins.
Pop quiz: What spices make up Pumpkin Spice? It’s cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove.
Participants delved into the essence of pumpkin spice, uncovering the harmonious blend of these spices.
We explored essential oils ranging from woody, smoky, to herbaceous, citrusy, floral, and local scents.
We also explored the raw materials, like cloves from Big Island, cinnamon bark fresh from the tree, marigold flowers, and much more.
The Lei ʻohu Cosmetics scent journey is designed to heighten our sense of smell, ground us in our bodies, and help us intuitively gravitate toward our preferences.
To engage our sense of taste, we sipped a refreshing Cinnamon Pineapple Pumpkin Lemonade. The recipe is a unique Maui twist on traditional Tepache and Pumpkin Spice Lemonade.
It was so yummy, several guests have since asked for and recreated the recipe, which you can find here.
Next, we delved into the world of handcrafted cosmetics.
We crafted a marigold, sunflower macadamia nut oil infusion — a decadent, nourishing body oil.
We even added a touch of iridescent mica for a subtle sparkle and essential oils for fragrance.
This sparkling-scented body oil quickly became a favorite among the participants. You can try it at home with this recipe for DIY Marigold, Safflower, and Sunflower Fall Body Oil.
A unique and beautiful combination was created by Asaki, who chose a combination of mace and grapefruit. A beautiful spicy and fruity pairing!
Next, we created a Pumpkin Spice Latte milk bath, incorporating fresh pumpkin powder from the farm, various spices, and coconut milk powder. The coconut milk gave this Pumpkin Spice Latte Milk Bath a tropical Maui twist.
You can find the recipe to our DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte Milk Bath here.
As we ground, mixed, and poured, the participants engaged in lively discussions and exchanged beauty tips.
We also concocted an Enzymatic Papaya Pumpkin Face Mask, with an extra boost of pineapple juice for exfoliation and smoothing-powers.
This is the recipe to our DIY Enzymatic Papaya Pumpkin Face Mask.
The pineapples were sourced from Maui Gold, another farm on the slopes of Haleakalā Volcano; and the papaya from Ono Farms, a tropical paradise tucked in Hana.
Both are worth a visit for their Maui Farm Tours.
We smelled the fresh pineapple juice and then blended it with the papaya and pumpkin puree into a powerhouse mask. The result– a beautiful shade of orange. A dash of grapefruit essential oil gave it a refreshing zing!
As we concocted, the weather changed from misty to beautiful round drops of rain that fell in rhythm on the roof of our gazebo.
Just before the end of our workshop, the sky brightened again. Everyone departed with smiles, having taken time for connection and self-care.
Oh, and they also left with three handcrafted Lei ʻohu Cosmetics beauty products. And the knowledge to create more clean, handcrafted cosmetics using Maui’s bountiful ingredients!
It was a lovely afternoon of self-care, exploration, and connection.
