If you’re looking for a uniquely delightful experience, the Maui Gold Pineapple Farm Tour is a juicy adventure you won’t want to miss!
We eat Maui Gold pineapples weekly, if not daily, and LOVE them. However, when I booked this tour, I wasn’t particularly excited. What could be so great about a pineapple tour? Boy, was I wrong! Evelyn and I both thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
One of the best parts of this tour is that you’ll get to experience a part of Maui that you wouldn’t otherwise see. The plantation is tucked right off Haliimaile, offering stunning views: acres of pineapples of all sizes, Haleakala behind you, and the ocean glistening on both sides.
You’ll start across the street at the Maui Pineapple Store, where you’re picked up by a bus. Parking in their large lot is easy, and while you’re there, check out Makai Glassblowing.
Although the tour is not ADA accessible due to the uneven terrain at the farm, it lasts a manageable 1.5 hours and is perfect for the whole family. Kids older than 3 are welcome to join in the fun.
The excursion itself is both comfortable and fascinating. You’ll ride in a bus, stopping at various points to witness and learn about all stages of pineapple growth, including baby pineapples!
You’ll gain insight into the growing cycle of the pineapple plant and fruit, including how to propagate them. For example, did you know that it takes about 18 months for a pineapple to grow from planting to harvest? Additionally, a single pineapple plant produces only one pineapple at a time. Another fascinating fact is that pineapples are actually a collection of multiple berries that fuse together around a central core.
And, you can grow your very own Maui Gold Pineapple at home by simply twisting off the crown and putting it to root in water.
Moreover, you’ll learn how Maui Gold cultivates and harvests pineapples as Maui’s largest pineapple farm. They even conduct taste tests to determine ripeness.
A highlight of the tour is when your guide picks a ripe pineapple and cuts it up for you to taste right there. The fresh-off-the-field tasting is simply delicious!
The tour concludes at the packing plant, where you’ll learn about the history of the Maui Gold Pineapple plantation. This brings you full circle back to where you started.
And as a bonus, you’ll get to take two pineapples home with you. These pineapples are approved and packaged for airport transport—if they make it that far before you eat them.
Hawaii boasts several delicious and unique pineapples, such as Kauai Sugarloaf, Oahu’s Dole Pineapple, and Maui Gold Pineapple. Treat yourself to a taste test to discover your favorite!
No matter what, the pineapples here in Hawaii taste different from better than the ones you’ve had on the mainland.
What makes Maui Gold so special? Introduced to the market by Maui Pineapple Company in 2005, the “Maui Gold” variety is naturally sweet with low acid content. Its golden-yellow flesh is sweeter and less acidic compared to other pineapples, which tend to be a lighter yellow.
By 2006, the Maui Gold variety had firmly established itself as a local favorite. However, the canning industry was taking a hit, and in 2007, MLP halted its canning operations to focus solely on fresh fruit. MLP tried to continue operations but decided to end all pineapple production on December 31, 2009.
But, it wasn’t the end! The company soon reopened in Haliimaile as Maui Gold, this time with a singular focus on producing the freshest Maui Gold pineapples.
Now locally owned and operated, the farm not only offers a fantastic Maui Pineapple Tour but also a Maui Chocolate Tour and Maui Coconut Tour.
The synergy between tourism and agriculture has been a game-changer, helping to sustain farming operations and keeping the delicious legacy of Maui Gold alive.
To top off your tour, make a reservation at Haliimaile General Store across the street for lunch afterward. Indulge in a Pineapple Upside-Down Cake and a Piña Colada with Maui Gold pineapple! It’s the perfect way to conclude your delightful adventure!
